Genesis

Genesis is the opening book of the Hebrew Bible, retold here as one long family story that runs across many generations. It begins with nothing at all. God speaks, and there is light, sky, sea, dry land, animals, and finally people. He puts the first man and woman in a garden with one rule, and they break it. From that first wrong choice the story never stops moving: a brother kills a brother, the world fills with violence, and God washes it away in a flood, saving one family in a wooden ark and setting a rainbow in the sky as a promise never to do it again.

Then the story narrows to one man. God speaks to Abram, already old, and asks him to leave everything he knows for a land he has never seen. In exchange God promises him children beyond counting. Abram believes it, and then spends the rest of his life waiting for it: lying to kings out of fear, taking shortcuts, burying his wife in the only field he will ever own. His son Isaac inherits the promise. Isaac's twin sons nearly destroy it. Jacob buys his brother's birthright for a bowl of stew, steals his father's blessing with goat skins tied on his arms, and runs for his life.

Twenty years away make Jacob rich, married to two sisters, and father of twelve sons. One night at a river crossing he wrestles a stranger until dawn and comes away limping, with a new name: Israel. His favourite son, Joseph, is sold into slavery in Egypt by his own brothers, jailed for a crime he did not commit, and then lifted in a single day to govern the country because he can read a king's dreams. When famine drives his brothers to Egypt to buy grain, they bow to a man they do not recognise.

The book ends with a choice. Joseph can crush his brothers or forgive them. He tells them the truth — they meant him harm, and God turned it into the thing that kept the family alive — and he feeds them. Genesis closes in Egypt, with the promise still unfinished and a dying man asking his family to carry his bones home.
