Treasure Island

Jim Hawkins is a boy who lives with his mother and father at the Admiral Benbow, a small inn beside the sea in the west of England. An old sailor called Billy Bones takes a room there, pays in gold, drinks rum, and sings songs of the sea. He pays Jim to watch the road for a seafaring man with one leg. Billy is hiding from his old shipmates, and they find him: first Black Dog, then the blind beggar Pew, who presses the black spot into Billy's hand. Billy dies of fright, and Jim and his mother open the dead man's sea chest and take a packet of papers before Pew's crew arrives. Pew is trampled by the king's horses on the foggy road; Jim escapes with the packet.

The papers hold a map of an island with three red crosses on it, marking the buried treasure of the pirate Flint. Squire Trelawney buys a ship, the Hispaniola, hires Captain Smollett, and takes on a one-legged cook named Long John Silver. Trelawney cannot keep a secret, and by the time the ship sails almost the whole crew are Flint's old pirates.

Hiding in an apple barrel one night, Jim overhears Silver planning mutiny and murder. Jim warns the captain and the doctor. When the ship reaches the island the honest men take a wooden stockade in the woods; Jim meets Ben Gunn, a castaway marooned there for three years. Battles follow, men die on both sides, and Jim cuts the Hispaniola loose, sails her alone, and kills Israel Hands on the mast.

Returning to the stockade, Jim walks into Silver's hands. Silver keeps him alive as a bargaining piece. The pirates dig where the map says and find an empty pit — Ben Gunn moved the treasure to his cave years ago. The doctor's party ambushes the pirates, Silver surrenders, and the gold is carried aboard. Silver slips away with a bag of coins at the first port. Jim comes home rich, and dreams of a parrot crying "Pieces of eight!"
