White Fang

In the frozen forests of the Yukon, two men, Bill and Henry, drive a dog sled through the winter night. A pack of starving wolves follows them. Every night a dog disappears. A strange red-grey she-wolf lures the dogs away. Bill goes after her and does not come back. Henry is left alone by a small fire, surrounded by wolves, until a party of men arrives and saves him.

The she-wolf, Kiche, runs with an old grey wolf called One Eye. In spring she gives birth in a cave beside a stream. Only one cub survives the hungry season: a grey cub with his mother's courage. He learns the first law of the wild — eat, or be eaten. When One Eye is killed by a lynx, Kiche and the cub are alone.

One day the cub meets men for the first time. An Indian named Grey Beaver recognises Kiche — she was once his brother's dog — and names the cub White Fang. In the camp White Fang learns the law of the men and suffers the bullying of a young dog, Lip-lip. He grows fierce and lonely. Grey Beaver becomes his master, hard but fair. Through a terrible famine, White Fang stays loyal.

At Fort Yukon a cruel man, Beauty Smith, buys White Fang with whisky and takes him up the river to Dawson, where he turns him into a fighting dog. White Fang wins every fight, until a bulldog named Cherokee locks its jaws on his throat. A young engineer, Weedon Scott, stops the fight and buys the dying wolf-dog.

With patience and kindness, Scott teaches White Fang to trust and to love. When Scott must return to California, White Fang breaks a window to follow him. At Sierra Vista, Scott's family ranch, White Fang learns to live among people, children, chickens and a sheepdog named Collie. When Scott's horse falls and breaks his leg far from the house, White Fang runs home and barks until the family follows him — and wins them all. One night an escaped convict, Jim Hall, breaks into the house to kill Judge Scott. White Fang attacks him and is shot three times. Slowly he heals. The Blessed Wolf walks into the sun with Collie and their puppies.
