The Wrong Name

Ana Cruz lands in Bogotá on a Tuesday night and checks into the Hotel Bacatá, a small hotel in La Candelaria, just before midnight. The night clerk, Óscar Pinzón, has her sign a check-in slip over a carbon — her own true name — then writes a different name in the register; Ana sees it before he turns the page. At breakfast a stranger, Rubén Ferrer, repeats her name before she has finished saying it. Doña Emilia, a flower seller, gives Ana directions to La Puerta Verde and mentions, unasked, that Rubén asks about every foreign guest. On the walk over, a man in a grey coat turns every corner she turns. That evening she dines at La Puerta Verde, pays, keeps the receipt, and leaves her red scarf on a chair inside. At eleven Rubén is found dead at the restaurant door, the scarf on the ground beside him. Detective Nidia Salgado reads Ana's register line aloud — the name is not hers — and asks her not to leave the city: she is a suspect. The register also holds Rubén's name, for a room he never slept in. Her lawyer, Lucía Mora, learns that room nine was paid in cash under no name, and that a witness puts Ana at the restaurant door at eleven — an hour she spent at the hotel. Then the receipt that proves it vanishes from her room. Tracing the grey coat costs Doña Emilia a police visit and her flowers; Ana apologises, and Emilia gives her the name: Julián Pinzón, the night clerk's brother. On Monserrate, Ana finds Julián with Detective Salgado, who has followed him for a week. Julián admits he wrote the false line at his brother's instruction and stole the receipt — room nine was Óscar's cash trade under Rubén's name, and Rubén knew — but insists Rubén was already dead at the door. Julián held register and key only at his brother's hand; one person alone controlled both. Confronted at the hotel desk, Óscar says he is sorry and drops the register into the fire. The register burns; the carbon duplicate of Tuesday's check-in slip — Ana's true name in her own hand, filed by Óscar himself — does not, and the divergence proves the false line deliberate. Óscar is arrested, and Ana checks out with her own name written correctly for the first time.
